Detroit is known for its zealous sports fans, and many of them
are turning their attention to the
Wayne State Warriors. Attendance at games is up — 20 percent
higher than last year overall, even higher in certain sports.
Tens of thousands of followers came to campus to watch the Warriors
compete in their best season ever. They claimed a ranking of 25th
out of 285 teams in the 2005 Directors’ Cup standings of the
National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Ten of
the school’s 17 sports advanced to NCAA postseason championships.
But the successes on the field only tell part of the story.
“Service to the community is a fundamental part of our athletics
approach,” notes Athletics Director
Rob Fournier. “As much as we emphasize academics and championships,
part of the cornerstone of our foundation is to underscore the value
of charitable activities. These outreach efforts are
as important for the student-athlete as the recipient. I have a
firm belief we better appreciate our personal gifts when we share
them with others. To have our student-athletes commit more than
3,000 community service hours in an academic year is phenomenal.”
