Reducing Fear

“The most effective weapon against fear is information,” says David Martin, research director, Urban Safety, Center for Urban Studies.

He believes in the power of information so much that he developed mapping software that gives police new tools in the fight to prevent and control crime. This software identifies high-crime areas within the community.

Mapping combined with ongoing statistical analysis helps police work more effectively with community groups to identify the causes of crime and to take remedial actions. These include increasing patrols, improving lighting or signage, and taking legal steps such as issuing nuisance abatement law violations or code violations.

The Center for Urban Studies also has partnered with LEAP Detroit to combat the fear of lead poisoning. WSU is developing a Web-based registry of all homes containing lead in Detroit, so residents will know about the threat of poisoning.
