Celebrate Diversity
I grew up in Southwest Detroit, where a lot of my friends are first-generation Americans. It's a very close community, and entering a large university can be a huge culture shock. For me, CBS (Center for Chicano-Boricua Studies) was just like having my small community again. The counselors were accessible, They were like a support network to guide me through the maze of my freshman year. For many of my friends, just seeing a Latino professor was an inspiration. It gave them a role model. With CBS, the university didn't feel so large. It felt a little more like home.
