The School of Business Administration conducts a 10-week E-Commerce
Summer Camp program for 11th- and 12th-grade students from Detroit
and Inkster schools. Every summer, 40 promising students attend
this camp to get information about paid corporate internships and
to learn business skills and e-commerce language such as HTML.
The Wayne State University Department of Music hosts the Sphinx
Preparatory Music Institute
for musicians ages 12 to 18. The program is designed to address
the needs of African-American
and Latino students in pursuit of music studies at beginning and
intermediate levels. Each Saturday during the fall and winter terms,
the organization offers classes in music history and instrumental
performance in the department’s Old Main facilities.
“The Sphinx program provides a great opportunity for children
to learn about classical music and theory while developing their
performance skills. It also serves as a bridge to the community
by offering access to a wonderful music program to kids who might
not otherwise be able to participate,” says Pat Baldwin, parent
of a ninth-grade student who attended the music program.
The University Library System conducts a community arts outreach
program for middle and high school students in Metropolitan Detroit.
During half-day workshops, students are trained in the process of
creating literary chapbooks.
These books, collections of the students’ poetry and essays,
are published on the Internet. They follow a long tradition of chapbooks
dating back to the 1500s, when peddlers known as “chapmen”
sold poetry and stories in the streets. The outreach program is
intended to encourage the writing and reading of poetry and literature.
