Providing Legal Services

“The Free Legal Aid Clinic is a win-win for the community and our students,” says Professor David Moss, Assistant Director of Clinical Education at the School of Law. The Free Legal Aid Clinic, the Law School’s oldest and largest clinic, is a collaborative venture between the Law School, a student-run non-profit organization, and the Legal Aid and Defender Association of Detroit.“The Clinic provides free representation to individuals who cannot afford a lawyer, primarily in family law cases such as divorce, child custody, and child support. Students participate both to get real world experience and because they are public-spirited people with an honest desire to help the community,” Professor Moss explains.

The School of Law also runs the Disability Law Clinic, working with children and adults with disabilities, to help them get the disability insurance, Medicaid and Social Security income they’re entitled to. The efforts of this clinic ensure that children with disabilities get the special services they need in the public schools and that people receive assistive devices necessary for tasks of daily living.
